One system, many owners

Offshore wind, a hydrogen backbone, heat networks, industrial clusters and millions of flexible devices behind the meter. Every part is built, owned and operated by someone else — and together they still have to behave as one system.

Making that system describable, modellable and interoperable — so plans, models and market parties actually add up — is the work.

Modelling language

ESDL Energy System Description Language

One uniform format to describe a complete, hybrid energy system: assets, energy carriers, connections, locations, costs and profiles. Open source under Apache 2.0, developed at TNO with partners across the sector — and the basis for tools such as the ESDL MapEditor and the energy system simulator ESSIM.

Flexibility standard

S2 Energy flexibility

An open communication standard between the manager of a device — a heat pump, EV charger, battery — and the system that steers it. Devices offer their flexibility without giving up comfort or replacing the manufacturer’s own protocol. Published as European standard EN 50491-12-2.

Interoperability

Making the parts fit

Grid operators, municipalities, industry and software vendors each model the same system differently. I work on the agreements, data mappings and reference implementations that let separate tools and organisations exchange something they both understand.

Modelling

Open-source energy system modelling

From a neighbourhood heat plan to a national scenario: models that carry real weight in decisions should be open to inspection. Building them as open source means results can be checked, reused and improved by anyone who has to live with them.

Shared infrastructure needs shared code

As open source manager at TNO I help research software get out from behind one organisation’s door — with a licence, governance and a community that can carry it. As an ambassador for LF Energy I connect that work to the wider European energy software ecosystem.
